Frequently Asked Questions
Question 1 I have a degree in Computer Science; if I go straight into my Masters Program would it help me get a good job in computer games?
Getting your Masters Degree is always a bonus to potential employers however, if you have a chance to get some actual experience making games at a good studio then it is my opinion you should take the job and get some experience out in the working space. Then you can find out what area you want to specialize in for you Masters Program. Today many positions require specialization and with some actual experience you can find out what part of the game making you enjoy and what you don’t.
Question 2 I have an opportunity to take a leadership position right away at a small company. Should I take this opportunity or should I take a regular entry position at a bigger development studio?
It is always tempting to become a manager right away if the opportunity arises and of course you think it would look good on the resume but new employer will discount that title and it will become more of a negative than a positive. If you have the potential to be a leader you should prove yourself in the trenches and start as an engineer and learn and experience what it takes to be a manager and a leader. Believe me you will get your chance to be a lead and then move up to whatever your goal might be but just out of school how can you have the technical experience to lead other engineers with more knowledge and experience than you? How can you mentor others without ever being mentored yourself?
Question 3 I have an opportunity to join a small company doing Serious Games. Should I take that job or join an studio making entertainment games?
That is a question only you can answer. If you want to make fun entertaining games for the public to enjoy and you like to play yourself then you should make those games, if you don’t care and if you are not an avid gamer, then don’t get in this industry. It is an exciting erratic mercurial and creative experience. It is exciting and stressful and rewarding. The people are not just smart but they are creative sometime with very strong personalities and it is definitely not boring. The other job is more main stream. The people are also smart and creative but in a different way. It is not boring either but very different.
